These remarkable pair of George III sterling silver salt cellars, made in London in 1810 by the celebrated silversmith Paul Storr, exemplify the imaginative naturalism and technical virtuosity that established Storr as the foremost English silversmith of the Regency period. Both functional and sculptural, they transform the humble salt cellar into an object of striking artistic ambition.

Each circular bowl is embraced by a pair of finely modelled serpents whose sinuous bodies coil around the exterior, forming both supports and handles. The creatures rise elegantly from beneath the vessel, their textured scales meticulously chased to create a convincing sense of movement and vitality. Their intertwined bodies terminate at the rim, where the serpents appear poised in protective guardianship over the gilded interiors. The bowls themselves are of restrained, classical form, allowing the dramatic serpentine ornament to command attention. This juxtaposition of plain polished surfaces and richly modelled decoration is characteristic of Storr's finest work.

The design reflects the Regency fascination with the exotic and the antique. Serpents had long been associated with wisdom, eternity and protection in classical mythology, and their use in decorative arts became particularly fashionable in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
