This silver-gilt basket, crafted in London in 1802 by Digby Scott and Benjamin Smith, exemplifies the refined artistry and technical mastery characteristic of early nineteenth-century English silver. The decorative scheme centres on a naturalistic grape and vine motif, a signature of Scott & Smith with clusters of grapes, curling tendrils, and sharply detailed leaves weave around the openwork structure, giving the basket a sense of movement and delicacy.

The basket reflects distinct Neoclassical influences through its symmetry, refined ornamentation, and harmonious proportions. Scott and Smith, known for producing luxury silver for the finest customers, display their technical prowess in the crispness of the cast elements and the fluidity of the pierced design. As a whole, the basket stands as a compelling example of Regency-era craftsmanship, balancing opulence with elegance and transforming a functional object into a work of decorative art.
