William Comyns
Length: 46cm (18.1in)
Weight: 61oz (1897.1gr)
A fine and rare late Victorian silver trefoil entrée dish by the celebrated London silversmith William Comyns. The elegant pull-off cover is of lobed form, with the interior divided into three shell-shaped compartments radiating from a central ring finial. One lobe is engraved with a coat of arms and crest, while the turned ebonised wood handle is fitted with a silver collar.
The design draws clear inspiration from early eighteenth-century silver, reflecting the Victorian fascination with reviving historic styles. William Comyns was renowned for producing exceptional quality silverware inspired by antique forms, combining period influences with the precision and craftsmanship of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This distinguished piece is an excellent example of his ability to reinterpret earlier designs with remarkable attention to detail and finish.
