Diameter: 8.8in (22.2cm)
Weight: 28.7oz (893gr)This exceptional George I punch bowl was crafted in London in 1719 by the silversmith Thomas Langford. In keeping with the legal standards of the period, it is made from Britannia Standard silver, with a purity of 95.8%, notably higher than the sterling standard of 92.5%.
The bowl is beautifully hallmarked to the underside and features an original engraved inscription commemorating the birth of Francis Bennet on 8th February 1718. It survives in remarkable original condition, with a superb surface that clearly displays the silversmith’s planishing marks. The patina has developed naturally over time and is exactly what one hopes to find on the finest silver from this era. Altogether, this piece stands as a true early 18th-century treasure.
