A George II Rococo Style Basket

Made in London in 1905

Maker's Mark of Herbert Lambert

Length: 28cm (11in)

Width: 23cm (9in)

Height: 21.5cm (8.45in)

Weight: 1400gr (45oz)

This is a beautiful early 20th century George II style basket. It is almost a direct copy of a basket made by the great George II silversmith, Charles Frederick Kandler made circa 1740.

In the later part of the 19th and early 20th centuries in London it was very popular to copy the great rococo pieces that were made in the mid 18th century by silversmiths such as Paul de Lamerie and Kandler. They are always of extremely high quality as is the case with this piece and evidence of this is the fact it weighs 45oz which is very heavy for a piece of this size.

This basket is made in the high rococo style with Chinoiserie style figures on either side. It has cast and applied border and decoration and the body of the basket is beautifully pierced.

Overall this is a fabulous piece of silver that is extremely sculptural and it would look fabulous on its own on a mantlepiece or equally look magnificent filled with fruit or flowers.
