Digby Scott & Benjamin Smith
Weight: 62 oz excluding glass (1,934gr)
Length: 12.3in (31.4 cm)
The design of the present lot can be compared to an inkstand commissioned by George III, marked for Wakelin and Taylor, London, 1790 (Clayton, M.; The Collector's Dictionary of the Silver and Gold of Great Britain and North America; 1971; p.216 fig.312). Despite certain differences the influence is clear, and an 1803 example also by Scott and Smith may be seen (Vanessa Brett, The Sotheby's Directory of Silver, 1986, p.248 fig.1115) which more closely follows the form of the Wakelin and Taylor inkstand. Both this and the Wakelin and Taylor example have Royal presentation inscriptions.
